About DeathMessages
🔌 About DeathMessages
DeathMessages is a Minecraft plugin for replacing and customizing the game's built-in death messages. It loads configurable message templates for player, mob, tameable, and natural deaths and broadcasts text-component messages (with hover/click components) rather than the vanilla strings.
🎯 Purpose
The plugin exists to let server administrators control how death information appears to players: change wording, use placeholders, add colors and hover/click data, restrict broadcasts by world or region, and integrate with other server systems (placeholders, Discord, MythicMobs).
⚙️ Features
- Full replacement of vanilla death messages with configurable templates.
- Support for text components (hover text, click actions) and hex color codes.
- Multiple configuration files with many customizable messages per damage type.
- Per-world messages and a disabled-worlds list.
- WorldGuard region flags to suppress specific death message types (player, mobs, natural, tameable) when enabled.
- PlaceholderAPI integration: plugin exposes a set of placeholders for victim, killer, and plugin state.
- Optional hooks for MythicMobs and DiscordSRV (configuration-driven).
- Bungee/Proxy support for global messages.
- Emits API events (BroadcastDeathMessageEvent, BroadcastTameableDeathMessageEvent) and provides a PlayerManager utility class.
- Configurable event priority and gang-kill detection for grouped mob kills.
🧩 Who It Is For
- Survival / SMP servers that want custom or themed death messages.
- Servers using placeholders or external systems (DiscordSRV, MythicMobs) that need consistent message formatting.
- Servers that require per-world or region control over message broadcasts.
🏗️ Example Use Cases
- Replace default death lines with themed or roleplay-styled messages using hex colors and hover text.
- Use PlaceholderAPI values (victim name, killer name, last location) inside death templates.
- Prevent death messages from appearing inside WorldGuard-protected regions.
- Broadcast death events to a Discord channel via DiscordSRV hooks.

⚙️ Installation
📥 Setup
- Download the official plugin .jar and place it into your server
plugins/folder. - Restart the server and check console logs to confirm the plugin loaded.
- The plugin page notes Paper is recommended over Spigot.
📦 Dependencies
- Optional integrations mentioned by the author: PlaceholderAPI, WorldGuard, MythicMobs, DiscordSRV. These are optional hooks and not strictly required for basic message replacement.
🧠 Technical Notes
- The plugin exposes API events (BroadcastDeathMessageEvent and BroadcastTameableDeathMessageEvent) and provides a PlayerManager utility for plugin authors.
- Event priority is configurable via settings; the plugin can operate at a chosen PlayerDeathEvent priority.
- Supports multiple Minecraft major versions (explicitly tested across 1.12 through 1.21 on the official resource page).
🤝 When This Plugin Is Useful
If you need precise control over how death information is shown to players (custom wording, placeholders, per-world or per-region rules, and integrations), DeathMessages provides configurable templates and hooks while exposing events for further extension.
